Does flexibility lead to insecurity?

Reductions of working hours and massive redundancies are topics you never cease to hear about in the news. The job market is under pressure. Companies have a need for flexibility to stay afloat in this economic situation. Employees, on the other hand, need security in their jobs. How do you find the right balance between security and flexibility in this time of globalization, an ageing population, and the financial crisis?

At Tilburg University, we study those aspects that affect individual people and society at large. Because we are in an excellent position to know that there is more out there than just the Netherlands. Because we are engaged in top-quality research and teaching in the areas of economics and business, the law, social sciences, communications, culture, philosophy, religion and theology. Because we want to understand and want to explain things.

The new multidisciplinary research institute ReflecT organised a seminar on social security in Europe, in the light of globalization and the credit crisis.

The seminar was held on 29 January 2009. How do we create sufficient flexibility without having to give up too much security?
Minister Donner, EU commissioner Spidla of Social Affairs and the Mayor of Tilburg Ruud Vreeman are among the speakers at this seminar.
