History
The University of Mannheim emerged from the "Municipal Commercial College"
(Handelshochschule) which was founded in 1907. The college was closed in 1939,
and then re-established in 1946. In the fifties and sixties the humanities and the
Law School were established alongside the economic and social sciences. As a
result the council of ministers of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg decided
to re-name the business school on the 4th of July 1967, and it thus became the
University of Mannheim.
LocationOne city - two rivers
The city of Mannheim is situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers
and is home to 310,000 inhabitants. The city centre is divided into squares - a
system which makes it easy to find your way. In Mannheim, a multi-cultural city not only of theatres, music and art, but also of technology, industry and business (e.g. BASF and SAP), the University of Mannheim has found its ideal setting. Moreover, Mannheim is the sixth economically strongest city in Germany.
Studying in a baroque palace
The University of Mannheim is considered one of the most beautiful universities in
Germany. The university is mainly located in Mannheim's palace - the largest
baroque palace in Germany. Lecture halls and libraries have been renovated
thanks to private donations.

In the field of economics and business administration as well as social sciences,

- MZES
The Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (Mannheimer Zentrum für
Europäische Sozialforschung, MZES) - which is closely connected to the Faculty of Social Sciences - is recognized as one of the leading European research institutes in the field of sociology and political science. Teaching and research at the faculty are well-known for their empirical-analytical orientation and their European focus.
- MEA
The mission of MEA, the Mannheim Research Institute for the Economics of Aging, is to evaluate, anticipate and accompany the micro- and macroeconomic aspects of demographic change. MEA is part of several international research networks and thus combines academic research on a high international level with strictly scientific policy consultancy. MEA's work is closely interlinked with the different faculties of the University of Mannheim.

Undergraduate Studies
The university offers Bachelor degrees in Economics and Business Administration,
Social Sciences, Humanities, Law, Information Management and Business
Mathematics. The university's strong interdisciplinary focus shows in programs
such as "B.A. in Culture and Economics", "Mathematics of Economics" and
"Unternehmensjurist (LL.B.)" which combines extensive knowledge of economics
and civil law and economic law.
Graduate Studies
The University of Mannheim offers Master programmes in all faculties. It was one
of the first universities in Germany to establish its first Master programs as early as 1998. All courses of study, with the exception of the Master of Comparative Law, are consecutive courses.
Postgraduate Studies - Further Education
MBS (Mannheim Business School gGmbH) is one of the leading institutions of its
kind in Europe. This is proven by a number of national and international rankings.
Doctoral Studies
The University of Mannheim offers students the possibility to do an individual
doctorate as well as a structured doctorate program. In the individual doctorate,
which is the traditional option in Germany, doctorial candidates are supervised by
a chair.
- GESS
Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the "Excellence Initiative",
the graduate school provides doctoral training in empirical and quantitative
methods and their application to business, economics, and the social sciences.
The graduate school is the first of its kind in Germany and is among very few in the
world to integrate the disciplines of business, economics, and the social sciences
into a coherent curriculum.
- Formations of the Global
As an interdisciplinary research forum, attached to the Humanities department of
the University of Mannheim, the graduate program is designed to introduce cultural
studies perspectives to the burgeoning field of globalization studies.

Internationality
The University of Mannheim currently maintains approximately 300 partnerships
with universities in countries all around the world. These partnerships include
student and staff exchanges as well as various types of scientific research
programs.
Moreover, all schools of the University of Mannheim offer numerous lectures and seminars in English. For foreign students of business administration, it is even possible to attain the full number of ECTS credits required from their home university from classes held in English.
