Research at CEU
Education
Since its founding in 1991, Central European University has sought to contribute to innovative academic research, progressive higher education and the development of dynamic, sustainable open society. In its first decade, the university had turned primarily towards the population of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union countries. More recently, its interest has become global, with special attention paid to emerging democracies throughout the world. CEU is also a research university with more than 400 doctoral students in its student body of 1,400. Educational and research activities at CEU are based on the promotion of innovative and creative ideas, particularly those of an interdisciplinary scope. In the European Research Area, CEU participates in numerous FP6 and FP7 research projects, and Marie Curie training networks, as well as other international research projects financed by the European Commission and other European, American and Hungarian funding agencies. Accredited both in the United States and in Hungary, CEU embraces the Bologna Process, actively partaking in the modernization of higher education across Europe, while also cultivating its ties to leading universities in the US. CEU has an Erasmus Charter which allows students and faculty to take part in the Erasmus/Lifelong Learning Program (LLP).

III. Erasmus Mundus Master's degree programs
CEU is a partner institution in several Erasmus Mundus consortia, offering two-year Master's degree programs in the following areas:
- MS in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management (MESPOM) prepares students for careers in a wide range of environmental fields. Students are given a thorough understanding of sustainability polices and matters related to solving environmental problems.
- MA in Public Policy (Mundus MAPP) is a 2-year-long international Masters' course embedding the nascent field of transnational public policy into a European context. Students are given a detailed understanding of how political institutions, processes and public policies operate and interact. Practical work experience is provided through an internship program, preparing graduates for careers as policy makers, analysts and advisors.
- The Joint European Master in Women's and Gender Studies (GEMMA) develops independent critical thinking with a broad basic knowledge of gender studies. Students are introduced to the major theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject.

Research at CEU CEU is a research-intensive university which aims at both academic excellence and social engagement. Its research is focused on the critical problems of the 21st century ranging from climate change and bioethics to migration and gender equality. The 3CSEP is an interdisciplinary research and educational center at the CEU whose mission is to foster solutions to climate change and sustainable energy challenges while advancing the implementation of development agendas. The CEPL is dedicated to strengthening environmental policy and law in Central and Eastern Europe, the Newly Independent States, and other countries and regions in transition through: research excellence, capacity building and global and regional outreach. The CEP is aimed at improving scientific cooperation in the field of environmental protection between domestic and international research institutes, governmental and non-governmental organizations. The idea behind its establishment was based on the recognition of a new and increasingly developing interdisciplinary field: the ethical, legal and social implications of biotechnology. The work activities of the center include policy research and academic teaching in the field of bioethics and biomedical law. The center runs an online biolaw database and participates in several international research and policy networks. The research work of CENS includes analysis of the lessons of the most recent enlargements and of the potential further events of the next years. Research areas span beyond the concept of enlargement, by investigating the potential fields of application for the extension of EU rules and norms as well as their effects on the European neighborhood. The center serves as a basis and catalyst for research activities mobilizing the EU, its Southern, Southeastern and Eastern neighborhood, as well as the transatlantic dimension. It is a research institute dedicated to promoting an interdisciplinary study of the Hellenic tradition. The center is interested in the spread of concepts, ideas and material culture across different intellectual enterprises and different peoples. Its aim is to promote a fundamental reinterpretation of interactions of intellectual traditions which eventually gave rise to what one could call the "Hellenistic Oikumene." The center is dedicated to improving the quality of governance in the region by the provision of independent public policy analysis and advice. The center is committed to strengthening local capacity for critical policy analysis and pursues research and publication that is interdisciplinary and carried out with partners in the global policy community, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. CPS is actively seeking to involve the broader CEU community in its activities. In recent years, 25 Master's and doctoral students have been working with major CPS research projects, and several alumni have been employed permanently with the center. Through internship programs and course offerings, CPS research staff have also served as mentors, helping students to upgrade their skills in intelligent research assistance, data gathering by various (mostly) qualitative methods, policy analysis and evaluation, and occasionally research and knowledge management. http://cps.ceu.hu Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS)
The CMCS is a member institution in an international project aiming to address the challenges facing media and communication studies, in partnership with the Annenberg School for communication at the University of Pennsylvania, the Budapest Technological University and Stanhope Center, London. These are framed both as a wider approach in relevant disciplines like political science, sociology or legal studies, and as a novel theoretical attempt for a better understanding of problems of innovation, meaning, sovereignty, cultural processes, etc. CMCS conducts research projects, organizes conferences and workshops, and offers courses in media-related subjects. The center collaborates with the public policy department in the Media, Information and Policy Stream, and with the political science department on the specialization in Political Communication. The aim of this center is to create a problem oriented interdisciplinary platform, that coordinates network research at CEU in a field that evolved to be arguably the most interdisciplinary over the last fifteen years. The center also aims at becoming a focal node in organizing network science in Europe, and establishing connections to the US. The current work at the Center at this early stage is mostly towards setting up its own collaborative networks, within CEU, Europe, and internationally. The research activities of the DISC start out from the recognition that although never in human history have so many countries been governed by democratically elected leaders, something seems to have become tainted in the state of democracy. Recent developments suggest that democracies, both old and new, are facing serious challenges. DISC seeks to advance and encourage research that reaches across traditional academic and geographic boundaries that exist in the study of democracy, by creating research opportunities for CEU faculty and students, and, in general, connecting researchers from distinct world regions and from various fields and perspectives. The Open Society Archives at Central European University is an archival laboratory. While actively collecting, preserving, and making openly accessible documents related to recent history and human rights, it continues to experiment with new ways to contextualize primary sources, developing innovative tools to explore, represent, or bridge traditional archival collections in a digital environment. OSA Archivum is an open-access facility which is committed to making research materialsavailablefree of charge to the public in general, and especially to researchers and students from all over the world working on specific research topics. OSA provides textualand/oraudio-visual copies solely for research and educational purposes. Its Research Room is equipped with microfilm/microfiche readers with integrated printers, computers with Internet access, VCR+TV sets, scanner and a digital camera plus with wide selection of handbooks and journals. http://www.osa.ceu.hu Pasts, Inc. Center for Historical Studies
This center serves as the core of an international, interdisciplinary, intercultural network of scholars based in Budapest and around the world. It is closely associated with CEU's Department of History, whose best students and alumni participate in the center's work. It also collaborates with other CEU units, such as the departments of medieval studies, gender studies, the Jewish Studies Program and the Center for Arts and Culture. Past, Inc. hosts and sponsors a refereed journal, East Central Europe/L'Europe du Centre Est/Eine wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift, established in 1974. Publishing projects launched by the center include a book series with CEU Press (Pasts Incorporated: CEU Studies in the Humanities), and a series of documents and research reports. The center's research projects, conferences, workshops, lecture series, lectures, and publications focus on Central and Eastern Europe in European and global perspectives, and cover topics such as: empires; symbolic geographies; time and temporalities; recent history; history and theory of historical studies; social history; cultural history; history of ideas; history and social memory; history didactics and history textbooks; religion; literature; language; and the history of science. http://www.ceu.hu/pasts
SPECIAL AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS (SEP)It comprises two units: . the Special Projects Office (SPO) . the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC)
SEP acts as an umbrella to the Human Rights Initiative. It provides a bridge between CEU and the Open Society Institute (OSI), and a bridge between CEU and its target countries. To this end, SEP offers programs for university professors, researchers, professionals, and administrators. SEP also makes available organizational and intellectual support for OSI projects (especially the Higher Education Support Program, HESP). SEP provides the following services: making available the academic and physical resources of CEU for the benefit of its target countries and of OSI's network programs; managing projects on behalf of OSI, developing and supporting CEU's own outreach efforts; and providing training and other technical assistance to support OSI's work in capacity-building for higher education. Target region and countries are Non-EU Eastern Europe, Southeastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Central Asia, Mongolia, and Palestine. SEP works at the following levels:

Following the purpose and goal of the Central European University, SPO supports all activities in higher education in Central and Eastern Europe, former Soviet Union, Central Asia, Mongolia, and South- East Europe. The Curriculum Resource Center (CRC)is Central European University's (CEU) external and internal resource, consultancy, and training unit in curriculum development and related issues with a special emphasis on social science and the humanities. CRC's main goals are capacity building, providing targeted resources to selected academics, consultancy, as well as professional development in higher education. Its activities include trainings in course design; supporting and developing selected faculty through course development grants; organizing workshops, events and conferences that explore innovative trends within the curriculum development context; as well as preparing CEU's graduate students for successful teaching career at universities in the region. http://web.ceu.hu/crc/
SUMMER UNIVERSITY
CEU's Summer University program (SUN) hosts high-level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary and innovative academic courses as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development in the social sciences and the humanities. Courses involve distinguished international faculty (including CEU professors), and excellent advanced doctoral students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals as participants.
Course offerings cater for the various needs of academic and professional development across a wide spectrum of disciplines. These include anthropology, cultural studies, environmental sciences, comparative religion, political science, public policy, sociology, international relations, legal studies, etc. The program encourages topics in newly emerging fields and transdisciplinary approaches. The program is unique in its diversity of faculty and student body as well as its academic offerings. This exciting multi-cultural composition of the courses provides a stimulating environment for engaging participants and faculty in an inspiring and enriching dialogue during the summer school. http://www.sun.ceu.hu/
LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE The Central Europe an University (CEU) Library is housed in the heart of the CEU teaching site in downtown Budapest. This rapidly growing library already has the largest collection of English-language materials in the fields of the social sciences and the humanities in Central and Eastern Europe. The Library currently holds over 200,000 documents in various formats, including 150,000 monographs, over 1,500 periodical titles (with 25,000 retrospective volumes), and 10,000 working papers titles. CD-ROMs, on-line electronic databases, and many other resources are also available for use. The primary concerns of the CEU Library are to develop a modern English-language university library in the fields of the social sciences and the humanities and to become a leading research and information center in the region by using all available means of information technology.The holdings of the Library reflect the extensive and specialized curriculum of CEU, focusing on subjects which will help develop and sustain open societies in Central and Eastern Europe. These subjects include comparative constitutional and business law, history, environmental issues, democracy, political and cultural pluralism, tolerance, questions of nationalism and ethnic problems, and gender studies. The unique collections and the latest dataretrieval technology, as well as the high level of service make the CEU Library an essential research institution in service of the social, economic, and political transition of the region. UNIVERSITY PRESS Following the founding of the Central European University by the Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros, Central European University Press, Budapest - New York was established in 1993. Reflecting the intellectual strengths and values of its parent institution, the press publishes books on the political philosophy and practices of open society, history, legal studies, nationalism, human rights, conflict resolution, open media, gender studies, Jewish studies economics, medieval studies, literature, and international relations. The publishing program of CEU Press focuses on issues of Central and Eastern Europe; it is also committed to the past and present history, society, culture and economy of the countries of the former Soviet Union and its neighbors. In 2003 the Press expanded its list to include books in the field of Arabic and Islamic studies.
