Tilburg wants 'European' University College
At the moment, a broad Bachelor's Programme, in the style of University College, is being developed at Tilburg University. By offering 'European culture in the broadest sense' as the central theme, the university hopes to attract excellent students to this new Tilburg Bachelor's Programme of Liberal Arts. In the Netherlands, at more and more places, Bachelor's Programmes similar to the University College model are being presented.
As from 2006, if everything goes as expected, the better and thoroughly motivated student will be able to enroll in the university-wide Bachelor's Programme, which will be entirely in English. All faculties will run courses with an emphasis on humanities in the new Study Programme. Recently, the initiators have asked permission to use a student selection procedure.
By making 'European culture in the broadest sense' the central theme, Tilburg hopes to distinguish itself form the other broad Bachelor's Programmes, like the ones in Maastricht, Utrecht and Middelburg. Students can specialize according to the major they choose.
The ambitious plans have been given quite a positive reception at the university. The question is if extra costs and attention for the excellent students will be at the expense of the 'ordinary' students.
Willem Witteveen, chairman of the initiators committee, doesn't think this will be the case, because they have a 'completely new group of students in mind'. Witteveen, who, among other things, is associated with the Nexus Institute, is investigating to what extent this institute, concerned with the philosophy of culture, can play a part in Liberal Arts education. By making use of 'the extensive network' of Nexus, for instance, Liberal Arts could attract interesting guest lecturers.
