Research TILEC
TILEC Research Programme: Market Governance 2007-2011
Excellence in research
TILEC is closely linked to the two internationally oriented research institutes of the Faculties of Economics and Law.
The CentER for Economic Research, founded in 1988, at the Faculty of Economics, covers all research fields in economics and business administration, and provides graduate programs (master and PhD) in economics, business and management.
The Schoordijk Institute, founded in 1992, at the Faculty of Law, accommodates several research centers, including the Center for Liability Law, the Center for Company Law, the Tilburg School of Politics and Public Administration, the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society, and the Center for Transboundary Legal Development.
Both research institutes have been accredited by the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) as graduate schools, CentER for the first time in 1992 and the Schoordijk Institute in 2001.
Ambition and Objectives
The Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) was created in 2002 as a joint research centre of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEB) and the Faculty of Law (FRW) of Tilburg University. It was evaluated positively in 2005. The report of the Peer Review Committee confirmed the need for TILEC to give itself a more formal research programme, after its initial phase where work was coordinated along loose research areas.
This first research programme, therefore, arises from the experience gained between 2002 and 2006 and covers the period from 2007 to 2011.
The TILEC mission for this period is as follows:
For the participating researchers from the two Faculties, TILEC provides support for and stimulates joint research activities, thereby enhancing the intellectual climate for research at Tilburg University. Towards the outside, TILEC aims to belong to the top in Europe and to be recognized as a leading centre in its areas of activity also in the US.
TILEC research will be distinguished by the following characteristics:
- Interdisciplinary: TILEC research integrates law and economics together on an equal footing, or at least includes substantial input from the other discipline;
- Innovative: TILEC brings law and/or economics further, and opens up new perspectives. Whilst this might imply that it leaves established paths in each discipline, it remains state-of-the-art at the technical and methodological level;
- Fundamental: TILEC research addresses basic questions of each discipline, including the relationship between the two disciplines and how they can mutually strengthen each other;
- Relevant. TILEC research is inspired by real world problems and aims to contribute to the ultimate solution of these problems.
The activities of TILEC include:
- cutting-edge (fundamental) research in the areas mentioned above;
- applied strategic and contract research in these areas, provided that this has positive spin-offs for fundamental research;
- joint activities (seminars, workshops and conferences) to stimulate academic discussion, and to increase the speed of knowledge creation and dissemination;
- an active visitors program;
- contributions to first-tier (bachelors and masters) programs in law and in economics so as to ensure that these programs keep in touch with the latest developments in research and in policy;
- education of PhD candidates in law or economics in the areas of activity of TILEC;
- in cooperation with TIAS, executive courses in selected subfields of law and economics, such as competition and regulation;
- links and exchanges with other high-quality centers active in the same areas.
