Tilburg Law and Economics Center

Market governance and innovation

Monday, 14 April 2008, Tilburg University

Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a conference on the theme "Market governance and innovation", which will take place in the auditorium of Tilburg University on Monday, 14 April 2008.

Innovation is central to the functioning of modern, growing economies. This conference aims at identifying the ways markets can be set up so as to facilitate innovation.

In the opening lecture, Carel Maske (Director Competition Law EMEA at Microsoft) will set out how an innovative firm manages its way through the web of national and international regulations. A first session on 'Competition and Innovation' (with key speakers Suzanne Scotchmer, UC Berkeley, and Gustavo Ghidini, University of Milan and Luiss Rome) will then focus on the interplay between innovation, intellectual property law and competition policy. In the afternoon, a session on 'Financing Innovation' (with key speakers Mike Wright, University of Nottingham, and Bill Megginson, University of Oklahoma) will discuss the workings of the market for seed capital and the need for financial markets themselves to innovate. The day will be closed with a distinguished panel of academics, Dutch and European regulators, and market players discussing the possible need for 'Regulating Innovation?'
