World Bank initiative offers free access to a world of data sources
The World Bank Group recently announced a new open data initiative. Via the new website http://data.worldbank.org/ it will offer free access to more than 2,000 financial, business, health, economic and human development statistics that had mostly been available only to paying subscribers.
The World Development Indicators, the Bank's most popular statistical resource, consist of over 900 indicators for 200 countries alone, including many that go back to 1960. The Bank has also opened up access to the Global Development Finance, Africa Development Indicators, Global Economic Monitor, and indicators from the Doing Business Report.
The World Bank's Open Data initiative is intended to provide all users with access to World Bank data. The data catalog is a listing of available World Bank data sources. This listing will continue to be updated as additional data resources are added. These resources include databases, pre-formatted tables and reports. Each of thelistings includes a description of the data source and a direct link to that source. Where possible, the databases are linked directly to a selection screen to allow users to select the countries, indicators, and years they would like to search. Those search results can be exported in different formats. Users can also choose to download the entire database directly from the catalog.
Opening access to the Bank's data is good news for everyone who is interested in global health and development and wants to get a quick overview of the latest trends or access the data for policy-making, research, and advocacy purposes.Accessing high quality data will allow policy makers, researchers, and civil society organizations to track the impact of policies, develop new solutions, and measure the progress of development more accurately. The new initiative is truly Open Access because users are allowed to work with the data to create new applications.
For more information, please contact Rob Grim from LIS-Academic Services.

Digital security #4: social media
Leaving to much information on social media can do damage to your (online) identity. Someone could use the information you publish to guess a password to one of your online accounts and thus steal your identity. Besides that, you could get turned down for a job interview based on your online identity.
Below you will find some tips for keeping your online identity safe:
- Hint 1: Be careful with what you say on social media. Some information could be later used against you.
- Hint 2: Use a strong password that is difficult to guess. This will prevent someone from hijacking your online identity.
- Hint 3: Even when you are not using social media, create a profile on the most popular ones. By doing this, you will prevent someone else from registering your name and thus forging your identity.

Digitalsecurity #3: protect mobile devices
Laptops, PDAs, tablet PCs and mobile phones are widely used nowadays and contain lots of (sensitive) information. By using one of the mentioned devices you are in risk of loosing the device AND its data. Or perhaps worse, someone else could have access to your data!
Below you will find some tips for securing your mobile devices properly:
- Hint 1: Secure your smartphone with a password too.
- Hint 2: Encrypt the harddisk of your laptop. Software can be downloaded or bought for this purpose.
- Hint 3: Do not save important data on your smartphone, because most data on smartphones can not be securedproperly.
- Hint 4: Make sure you backup data on your devices regularly. Specially designed software is supplied with your phone to do this. For laptops you can backup your data to a DVD or external hard drive.

It's prohibited to send SPAM. Breaking the rules will be punished.

Via the Tilburg University website all e-mail addresses of students and staff are available. The e-mail addresses in the Tilburg University address book are intended to be used as service to search for individual addresses. Using them to send mass mailings on e.g. books for sale or room for rent, is prohibited. E-mails you send togroups via e.g. Blackboard are also marked as SPAM. If you violate the rules concerning UvT e-mail, Internet and telephone facilities, measures will be taken. Read more about SPAM on our website.

Digital security #2: Protect your digital data
Everyone has digital confidential data. Whether you're handling your own login credentials, your pay slip or important company data, you will have to secure this data to keep it confidential. To help you secure yourconfidential data you can use the hints below:
- Hint 1: Log out or Lock your PC when you walk away from it.
- Hint 2: For securing small pieces of text, e.g. passwords, you can use an encrypted (password) database.
- Hint 3: Do not sent confidential data in clear text e-mail messages. You can either encrypt the e-mail message before sending it by using special software or, when sending a document as an attachment, you can first zip the document and password protect the zip file before sending.
- Hint 4: Encrypt the drive on which you are keeping the confidential data. For example, you could use an external hard disk or usb-drive for this purpose and encrypt it. By doing this, you can even store it at a safe place when you are away for a while (for example when you're on holiday).
- Hint 5: Makesure that you encrypt backups of your confidential data too!

Digital security #1: prevent phishing
Phishing is a form of digital fraud in which someone maliciously pretends to represent a legitimate organization, such as your bank or theinstitution where you work or study, and asks for your log-in data or credit card information. Phishing mails can be sent to you by e-mail, or you can come across a phishing site yourself or be guided to one. Below you will find some tips for preventing you from falling victim to phishers:
- Hint 1: Never click on a link, type the URL yourself. This way you are almost certain you will not be redirected to a website other then you would expect.
- Hint 2: Does the URL look strange? Then don't click it. It could be a link to a phishing website.
- Hint 3: Websites and e-mails with many spelling and grammar errors are quite often created by phishers. Be aware of this.
