The Department of Philosophy

The Department is an inspiring and stimulating centre for philosophical study and research in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Our undergraduate and graduate students are provided with first-rate expertise across, and thorough training in, a wide variety of philosophical fields ranging from logic, epistemology and philosophy of science to ethics, social, legal and political philosophy, philosophical anthropology and the philosophy of culture. All members of the department share a common interest in the relation between man, society and rationality. This focus can also be seen as the common denominator of research and study in the whole university. Accordingly, the Department actively engages in a variety of interdisciplinary research projects with other faculties at Tilburg University (especially Economics and Business Administration, Law, and Social and Behavioural Sciences) and elsewhere. Moreover, Tilburg University has recently established the Tilburg Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science (TiLPS). This interdisciplinary research centre is closely linked to the department and provides a forum for those interested in the foundations and the logic and methodology of science.

The Department offers four programmes of study: the undergraduate B.A. and three graduate degrees (M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D.). Whereas the B.A. and the M.A. are offered predominantly in Dutch, the entire M.Phil. is taught in English. The B.A. and M.A. degrees are offered both for full-time and part-time students.
