Language and Culture Studies
The Department of Language and Culture Studies is a group of scholars engaged in teaching and research in the broad field of language, culture and globalization. The focus of our research are new forms of linguistic superdiversity, new media, literature and visual art, and changes in the public sphere. Our research is organized in two programs: Language and Globalization (program leader professor Jan Blommaert) and Literature and visual art in the European public sphere (program leader professor Odile Heynders).
We teach in the bachelor- en master programs Communication and information sciences (Intercultural Communication) and General cultural sciences, the bachelor program Liberal Arts and the research master program Language and Communication of the Faculty of Humanities. Within the Babylon Centre we also teach in the minor program Studies of the Multicultural Society and the master program Organization of Cultural Diversity (Faculty of Social Sciences).
As of July 1, 2010 the Department of Language and Culture Studies and the Department of Religious Studies will merge into the new Department of Culture Studies (website under construction).
