Stapel and Klink first speakers UvT Society
Tilburg University Society Dr. Ab Klink, Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, and social psychologist Prof. Dr. Diederik Stapel, were the first speakers at the inauguration of the Tilburg University Society in The Hague. The first meeting of this new initiative took place on Friday 20 November in the 'Sociëteit de Witte' in The Hague. The Tilburg University Society aims at connecting politicians, board directors and policy makers with the university, its Professors and their research and herewith showing the relevance of research conducted in Tilburg. For this purpose, the university organises (private) meetings for a selective group of 40 to 50 participants in The Hague, Brussels and Tilburg. At these meetings, researchers will present their (most recent) findings to and discuss them with key figures. Initiator and president of the Tilburg University Society is Prof. Dr. Sylvester Eijffinger, Professor in Financial Economics. The Board of Directors and the faculties of Tilburg University support the initiative.

During this first meeting, Ab Klink talked about the role of elites in society. He believes that politics and society need to be reconnected. This, he believes, can be done with the help of charismatic leaders like Merkel, Verhofstadt, Mandela and Obama, who can formulate hopeful solutions for the three main themes of today: integration, aging, and sustainability.
Diederik Stapel director of the Tilburg Institute for Behavioral Economics Research (TIBER), presented recent findings about implicit and explicit preferences of Dutch constituents. Alleged contradictions between the electorate are much smaller than we think. Social-psychological research shows that those people who like structure and order can be found at the outermost left and right sides of the political spectrum. The supporters of the PVV and SP for example, are very alike in their preference for structure and clarity.

    Book: Temporary Organizations
This month the book Temporary Organizations: Prevalence, Logic and Effectiveness has come out at the publishing company Edward Elgar. It has been edited by Patrick Kenis, Martyna Janowicz and Bart Cambré (all working at the department of Organisation Studies).

Temporary organizations are an increasingly prevalent organizational form in which organizations work together on a joint task - for example, a movie production, a rescue operation, development of a new product - for an ex ante limited period of time. This book demonstrates that temporary organizations are increasingly common. It provides insights on how they differ from the classical organization and contributes to our understandingof what makes temporary organizations effective. Beside the editors mentioned above, there are also contributions from the Tilburg Organisation Studies scientists and CIR-researchers Marius Meeus, Leon Oerlemans, JorisKnoben and Patrick Vermeulen.
