Faculty Council

The Council is an important institution within our Faculty. Through the Council, personnel and students have a say in the policy of the Management Team. Admittedly, the Council currently has less formal competencies than it used to have before the so-called MUB (the law that regulates university administration) was introduced a few years ago. But still, for example, personnel policy, the strategy of the Faculty, or the educational programs can only be changed if the Council assents to these changes. Besides, the dean is obliged to ask the Council's opinion on all issues that are important for the course of business in the Faculty. This is not just a formality. The Management Team has to take the Council's opinion seriously and can only deviate from it after laying down its motivation and consulting the Council.

Even more important than these formal rights is that the Management Team is willing to take the Council seriously. The Management Team has repeatedly expressed that it views the Faculty Council as an important forum of personnel and students. The Team is willing to confer the Council at an early stage of the policy making process as this helps in formulating a policy that is supported by a large majority of the Faculty.

Most important is, however, that there are candidates willing to represent their colleagues in the Council. In the end, the members of the Council largely determine the role of the Council. The Council can only function as a forum if it is a good representation of the people in our Faculty. In this respect, it is important to note that it was decided that as of next year the meetings of the Council will in principle be in English.
