Research

The Department of Information Management performs fundamental and applied research in its Center for Research on Information Systems and Management (CRISM). CRISM research ranges from fundamental research Computerized Information Systems and Operations Research at the international scientific level, via fundamental and applied research projects with both national, international, and multinational partners to consultancy for various organisations.

The research mission of CRISM is "to explain, predict, design, and develop, and thus to improve the impact of IT on the performance of teams, organizations, and networks of organizations".

In business practice, new lateral organizational forms are emerging built around business processes, teams, and inter-organizational relationships. Cross-function, cross-business-unit, and cross-company availability of information is a cornerstone of modern organizations. There is an increasing demand for unified access to information resources distributed throughout local and global networks. These new generations of information systems will not come from any single research discipline, but will be best achieved by a multi-paradigm research group composed of scientists from different professional backgrounds and domains of expertise.

CRISM combines different research disciplines: Computer Science, Information Management, Organization Theory and Design, Supply Chain Management, and Operations Research.

The principal objective of the CRISM research group is to develop new concepts, methodologies, and cutting edge technologies with wide applicability that addresses challenging research problems. Cutting edge technology prototypes are developed in Infolab.

CRISM aims to develop state of the art knowledge regarding the application, content, and delivery of information and information systems originating from diverse organizations, improving decision making and integrating new technologies into the business practice. Problems and considerations that CRISM addresses apply equally well to medium-sized companies with network-based systems and to large organizations seeking to engage in the practices of international electronic commerce and become global businesses.

The targeted areas of research are summarized in the following broad categories:

  • Business Processes, Value Networks & their Governance
  • Knowledge Management and Collaboration
  • Electronic Services and the Management of Business Processes
  • Methods and Modeling
