Honorary Doctorate for Lans Bovenberg in Ghent
Lans Bovenberg (dept. Economics, Director Netspar) will receive an honorary doctorate from Ghent University in Belgium on 21 March 2008.

New heads of department: Bas Werker and Frank de Jong
Professor Bas Werker has been appointed the new head of the department Econometrics and Operations Research. Professor Frank de Jong has been appointed the new head of the Finance department as of February 1.

Nicole Fouchier to Leave FEB
Pien Versteegh Appointed Interim Director FEB
Today, Kees Koedijk, the Dean of the Faculty of
Economics and Business Administration (FEB), has appointed Dr. A.P. (Pien) Versteegh (managing director of CentER, see photo) interim director of the FEB for the coming six months. During this period the Faculty Management Team (FMT) will look for a permanent successor for Mr. N.A.M. (Nicole) Fouchier, with whom the collaboration in the FMT came to an end last Monday after mutual agreement. In its statement the FMT thanks Nicole for her contribution to further professionalising the Faculty Office, and its services, a process that will be continued by her successor(s). The FMT hopes to fill the position of managing director CentER as soon as possible.

New Faculty Medal won by Harry Barkema
Dean Kees Koedijk introduced a new Faculty award during the Christmas Drinks: the Tjalling C. Koopmans Medal, a special achievement award meant for those (former) staff members who contributed a lot to the success of the Faculty. Professor Harry Barkema, now working at RSM, received the first medal.

Henriėtte Prast in Scientific Council
Henriėtte Prast (Professor of Personal Financial Planning at the dept. of Finance) has been appointed as one of the new members of the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) as of 1 January 2008. The WRR advises the government about future developments of great public interest using a scientific approach.

FEB Awards 2007
At the end of year Christmas Drinks 2007 several FEB awards were announced and handed over to the winners. Vasso Ioannidou (Dept of Finance) won the Best Teacher Award. The Best Bachelor Course Award went to the course Academische Vaardigheden, with a prize of €1.000 for the Departments of Accounting, Finance, Organisation and Marketing. The course Empirical Applications won the Best Master Course Award. Together, the lecturers Arthur van Soest and Bertrand Melenberg won €2.500. Janneke Kuipers (ICT Office) received the Service Quality Award and Henriėtte Prast won the Free Publicity Award. The CentER Society Prize has been awarded to Paul de Bijl (CPB).

Vici for Boone and De Waegenaere
Prof.Dr. Jan Boone (Department of Economics) and Dr. Anja Waegenaere (Department of EOR and Accountancy) have both been awarded an NWO Vici grant of € 1.250.000.
This subsidy is given to outstanding, experienced researchers who have developed renewing research projects. Of course, the grants were celebrated with coffee and cake. Congratulations!
Anja de Waegenaere investigates the effects of increasing human lifetime on pension and health insurance systems. Her project will develop models for optimal redesign of pension and insurance deals, as well as optimal risk management strategies. In his research, Jan Boone will focus on the further development of research on the free market system in health care. Press release (in Dutch).
